Product Description

This diminutive giltwood and rattan settee is an exquisite example of Rococo Revival furniture, dating from the mid to late 19th century (circa 1850–1890).  It is ornately carved and features an elaborate openwork backrest with a central medallion and finely detailed floral and foliate motifs. The scrolling arms and legs are adorned with carved flowers, vines, and shells, typical of the Rococo aesthetic. The wood frame is finished in a rich gold leaf (gilt), enhancing its opulent appearance. The elaborate design suggest that it was made either in France or Northen Italy.

The backrest incorporates rattan in the central and side panels, contributing both elegance and airiness. The seat is newly upholstered in a plush, dark fabric with a subtle swirling pattern, contrasting strikingly with the gilded woodwork. The cabriole legs and serpentine seat rail further reinforce the Rococo influence, emphasizing curves, asymmetry, and natural forms. This piece would have been intended for a formal sitting room or salon, reflecting the tastes of the wealthy bourgeoisie or aristocracy of the time. Its craftsmanship and materials suggest it was a luxury item.
