Product Description

Two similar but not identical mahogany balloon back chairs from the Mid-Victorian (circa 1850–1880). The chairs are hand-crafted with traditional joinery techniques, indicated by the mortise and tenon joints, characteristic of 19th-century furniture. Both chairs feature a carved crest rail and a carved balloon outline, offering both aesthetic appeal and back support with a rich patina. The front legs are cabriole shaped a feature of  18th-century French Rococo design. The rear legs are swept outwards and plain, a typical feature in balloon-back chairs for stability and style balance. Both chairs are newly reupholstered in a modern bold floral fabric that adds a fresh twist with a large chrysanthemum motif and butterfly design, giving the chairs a contemporary feel. The balloon-back design became fashionable during the reign of Queen Victoria, and was influenced by the Rococo Revival movement, which favoured curvilinear forms and romantic ornamentation. They were originally used in dining rooms or parlours. They are ideal as statement or functional pieces in modern interiors as indicated by the mock-up image.
